battle of algiers

I watched The Battle of Algiers last night (part of my ongoing effort to learn French without too much effort) and it was GOOD. It's a retelling of the Algerian fight for independence from France in the 50s. Escalating cycles of violence, occupying forces that use torture to get their information, checkpoints (and a general attitude) that discriminates against arabs and muslims--all familiar themes, no? The fight was 50 years ago but it could have been the story of Palestinians, of Iraq. There were some great scenes with the leader of the rebellion talking about his rationale for using acts of terror and these super intense ones following some women as they're planting retaliatory bombs. You should give it a look.
